The name "Ouija" is derived from the combination of the French and German words for "yes": "oui" and "ja." This device typically consists of a game board marked with letters of the alphabet, numbers, words (such as "oui" and "no"), and sometimes symbols, along with a pointer usually called a "planchette." Participants place their hands on the planchette, which is resting on the board, and ask questions to which they hope to receive answers from the beyond.
The idea behind the Ouija board is that participants allow spirits to guide the board to point to the appropriate letters or words to form answers.
